Born and raised in South Boston, Virginia., Rod has experienced the rewards and blessings of a traditional work ethic. From the age of 13 until 17 he worked summers pulling tobacco in the fields of Halifax, Virginia which allowed him to pay his own way to attend Danville Christian High School.

While attending high school he worked in the textile mill Clover Yarns in South Boston, Va. During the summers of ’79 and ’80, he worked at Champion International to pay for college. From 1981 to 1985 he worked at Red Food warehouse in Chattanooga, Tennessee while attending college. In 1988 & 1989 while obtaining his Masters degree, he worked for the NBA Dallas Mavericks.

Rod earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1985. He earned a Master of Theology Degree from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1989. In 1999 Rod graduated from the program at the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership.

Since 1989 Rod has lived in Hillsborough and pastored Sunrise Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Rod registered to vote the day he turned 18 in 1978 as a Republican and he attributes this fact to the influence of President Jimmy Carter.

Rod married his college sweetheart, Gayle, in 1982. They have five children all of which have attended Orange County Schools, and a daughter-in-law who graduated from Northern High School in Durham.
